Support for Street Child United around the world

9 May, 2024

Street Child United is International School Partnership’s charity partner, and a vital component of our charitable objectives towards ensuring a world where every child can access their rights irrespective of their background. In doing so, ISP advocates four key priorities, challenging negative perceptions; right to identity; right to protection from violence and the right to education.

Street Child United

Street Child United use the power of sport to provide a global platform for street children, so they can demand the protection, support, and opportunities every child needs. It’s estimated that there are 150 million children living and working on the streets. Every year, our schools fundraise for this worthy project, and students of all ages and grades go above and beyond to support the cause.

Over the past year our schools have been busy organising events a variety of different events all with the aim of raising awareness as well as donations for Street Child United. Discover what some of our schools have been doing:

Color run at International School Andalucia

Student and teacher during the Color Run in International School AndaluciaThis year, Clare at International School of Andalucía came up with the idea of a colour run at our school in Seville. Hosted on school grounds, the event encouraged students and families to run as many laps of the playground as they could whilst throwing paint at each other and getting as colourful as possible.

The school was also able to connect the event with learning in the classroom. The students researched how far street connected children might walk in one day just to get water. They then used their persuasive writing skills to create videos and posters encouraging people to sign up. Teachers also provided incentives to increase the ticket sales, with one of the teachers promising to run laps dressed in flippers and a mask like a scuba diver

Almost everyone at the school participated, with over 200 people signing up as runners and many more families, students and teachers also joined in for the event. Everyone had a lot of fun and the school fundraised €780 for the Street Child United cause!

Thanksgiving 2023 at Rowntree Montessori, Canada

Canadian Thanksgiving lunch for the entire school in November 2023Rowntree Montessori are passionate about Street Child United and over the past few months they have been busy raising awareness and funds for SCU. It all began with Grade 8 students hosting a Canadian Thanksgiving lunch for the entire school in November 2023. A good struggle for Grade 8 as they learnt how to plan and organise an event for many people and understand the work that goes in to raising awareness, encouraging donations, catering for an entire school, determining what success means and calculating the donations afterwards.

Students and teachers have also been busy hosting other fundraising events including:
a Valentine’s Day ‘Cookiegram’ where students donated money to send a cookie to their friend. A Jersey Day where students paid to wear the jerseys of their favourite sport’s teams. A Wacky Wednesday event where students dressed up in their wackiest and weirdest costumes and hairstyles.

The school also welcomed Young Leader, Ailyn and CEO of Street Child United, John Wroe to their school. The students had a fantastic day marking the occasion by wearing the colour red, hearing about Ailyn’s struggles and participating in workshops with John.

Everyone at Rowntree Montessori had a lot of fun planning and hosting these events and it was rewarding to see how many students, parents, and teachers participated in the events, which resulted in raising $2000 for SCU.

Getting creative whilst raising money

Our school, Tenby Setia Eco Hills in Malaysia, have been busy raising money and awareness of SCU in multiple ways over the past few months.

Tenby Setia Eco Hills in Malaysia, raising money and creating awareness of SCU in multiple ways over the past few months. In 2023, students and staff hosted Competition Week where all primary students were encouraged to compete in various artistic and literary contests. The artworks weren’t just expressions of talent; they became beacons of hope, as some were displayed and auctioned during an Art Auction, symbolizing the power of art to spark change. Later in the year, the school hosted the SCU Christmas Bazaar bringing all students together for a festive fundraising extravaganza. Booths adorned with homemade treats, creative crafts, and exhilarating games filled the school grounds. The event not only fostered community spirit but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards those less fortunate.

More recently, Tenby SEH celebrated SCU Awareness Month, where the school adorned itself with button badges, proudly worn by students as symbols of solidarity. These badges weren’t just accessories; they were statements of support, reminding everyone of their role in advocating for street children’s rights. The SCU Young Leaders Campaign provided upper KS2 students with a unique opportunity to interact with SCU’s young leaders. This firsthand encounter empowered students, igniting a passion for advocacy and leadership within them.

We’d like to thank all our schools, teachers, parents and students in supporting us to raise awareness and donations for Street Child United. We hope you have enjoyed organising and hosting the events and we hope to see more of these fantastic fund raising stories across the world soon.
